Superintelligent AI Transitions Research

Forethought enables humanity to successfully navigate the transition to a world with superintelligent AI systems by conducting and disseminating research on neglected topics.

What problem is Forethought working on?

AI is already accelerating innovation, and may soon become as capable as human scientists.

If that happens, many new technologies could arise in quick succession: new miracle drugs and new bioweapons; automated companies and automated militaries; superhuman prediction and superhuman persuasion.

Forethought researches what we can do, now, to prepare.

What does Forethought do?

Forethought is a research nonprofit that researches how to navigate the transition to a world with superintelligent AI systems and works to ensure its findings lead to action. It publishes research on topics including AI-enabled coups, the dynamics of rapid AI progress, and what genuinely good futures might look like; and then works to translate those insights into practice by advising AI companies, informing policy discussions, finding and empowering individuals to work on specific projects, and building the field of researchers working on these challenges.

You can see more details of Forethought’s past activities and plans for the future on their website.

Please note that GWWC does not evaluate individual charities. Our recommendations are based on the research of third-party, impact-focused charity evaluators our research team has found to be particularly well-suited to help donors do the most good per dollar, according to their recent evaluator investigations. Our other supported programs are those that align with our charitable purpose — they are working on a high-impact problem and take a reasonably promising approach (based on publicly-available information).

At Giving What We Can, we focus on the effectiveness of an organisation's work -- what the organisation is actually doing and whether their programs are making a big difference. Some others in the charity recommendation space focus instead on the ratio of admin costs to program spending, part of what we’ve termed the “overhead myth.” See why overhead isn’t the full story and learn more about our approach to charity evaluation.
